Having issues transferring templates into GIMP
« on: 08/24/11, 01:57 PM »
I am just starting out car designs using GIMP. I have no experience using a program like this and I am having a rough go of things trying to transfer the files into gimp to paint. Can someone please help?

Can you be just a little less vague?
Define 'trying to transfer the files into gimp to paint'. Are you talking about opening paint 'templates'? If so, which ones? Photoshop (.psd) or Paint Shop Pro (.psp)?
For which mod? Bullring? SS.net? Rioux' CUP10s/w, CUP11s?
The more info you can provide about what it is you are trying to do, specifically, will help us to better help you.

If you can't spill it, it ain't 'paint'!

My apologies!

I am attempting to open templates to paint with a .psd file. So far I have attemped opening the ASA90 Chrysler template as well as the Cup10 Impala, and I recieve a file error each time. Like I said I have no experience using this program and the "help" I have gotten has been vague.

Good to hear that you figured out your problem. It's been my experience that whenever someone gets a file error opening a .psd in anything outside of Photoshop it's because either:
A: There are more than 99 layers,
B: There are Layers in Folders (and sometimes Folders within Folders) or
C: There are Layer Effects that are still 'active' (overlays, bevel & emboss, shadows, etc.).

If you're seriously going to get into this whole sim 'painting' thing, you might want to check eBay for a deal on some of the older versions of PSP (Paint Shop Pro ~ maybe like version 8 and above). And occasionally Jasc has some good deals on PSP11 (or whatever it is it's being called these days).

I'm pretty sure you can open .psd files in PSP and save as.  Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.  I've not used PSP.  I do know it does not work the other way, which is you can't open Paint Shop Pro files in Photoshop.  I would agree with Sage, check ebay for older (but still perfectly fine for painting) versions of PSP or Photoshop.

Back in the olden days (shortly after NR2003 came out) people began releasing stuff in .psp only (probably because it was their program of choice) and, at the time, didn't realize/know that PS (Photoshop) can't/doesn't/won't open .psp files. PSP on the other hand, not being the gigantic, snooty, holier-than-thou corporation (Adobe), made their product more user-friendly by enabling it to open pretty much any image file known to man.

As I said, there are some real good deals to be had out there. I picked up PSP8 something like 6-7 years ago on eBay for $25- just so I could 'Open' and then 'Save As...' the above mentioned files. Probably even cheaper nowadays.

As for tutorials, the best one I know of is the one by JimmyK. It can be found -> Here <-.  Even though it was written for the original game's templates, the processes remain the same. If you go back to JimmyK's home page there's an option to download the whole tutorial as a Word document.

Wow. It looks like Ill be getting a copy of PSP then. Im using a free trial now, along with GIMP and Im still trying to work out a few bugs (everything getting painted instead of only the car) but Im getting there. Im using the ASA90 Chrysler Template on GIMP to recreate an old Richard Petty Scheme (the Plymouth by Petty car) and its turning out well. I just have to get all the numbers and things like that sized right, rotated, etc etc.
