| 1969 #53 Tiny Lund Pepsi Torino posted by Dave76 | 07/26/17, 08:54 PM | 485 | 4.94 (1 vote) | |
|
The inaugural Talladega race was held in 1969, but nobody wanted to race, because the tires couldn't handle the speeds. Bill France Jr. told the drivers it was safe if you stroked a bit. To prove it, he got in this Torino, and ran a few laps for everybody to see. The trick didn't work, so he had a hell of a time getting anything close to a full field. He entered his own car, with Tiny Lund driving it, with sponsorship from Pepsi. I think that was the only time a car owned by the France family ran a race.

For a good part of the 1969 season, J.D. McDuffie ran a yellow 1967 Buick. I have no idea why, but that's just too bizarre to pass up! Includes pitcrew.
