Logo question
« on: 08/30/15, 03:13 PM »
I use Paint Shop Pro for painting cars. Is there a way to take logos like you would find on Google images and tutn them into logos with transparent backing like the logos you have in the download section. I guess they call them a .pgn file.

Sure.
Find the logo you want.

Bigger, as in image size ~ not necessarily resolution (most online images are 72dpi), is always better.

Create a new image at 300dpi with a transparent background.

Hit Ctrl+A (Select All) & then Ctrl+C (Copy All) on your D/L'd logo. Hit Ctrl+A & then Ctrl+V (Paste All) on your new image.

If you found a large enough logo then re-sizing shouldn't be an issue.
Grab the 'Magic Wand Tool'. In PSP8 it's located under the 'Selection Tools' fly-out (your version may be different). Use the 'Magic Wand Tool' to select the areas you want to eliminate and then press 'Delete'. Keep doing this until you have removed all of the parts that you want removed.

I don't know if it's the same in PSP as it is in Photoshop (probably is) but if you hold down the 'Shift' key while using the 'Magic Wand' you should be able to make multiple selections before hitting Delete.

Remember to save your new, transparent-based logo before exiting.

That should do it. Mind you, I wrote all of this from memory and not while I 'played along' but if you play around in PSP you should be able to figure it out.

Oh, and this will only get you a single layer on a transparent background. If you want it layered so you can change colors (like most of the logos I make)...well, that's a whole 'nother situation.
I went outside once. The graphics weren't all that great.

If you can't spill it, it ain't 'paint'!

I have the magic wand tool.  I went through the steps you left for me. It left a "Christmas Light" effect around the image. When I hit Delete, All I can do is make the logo disappear leaving the backing.  Any Idea what I might be doing wrong?

Without seeing what it's doing it's hard for me to say what's wrong.
Can you post a screen shot?
Better yet would be to post a link to the logo you're trying to work. Maybe then I can fire up PSP and see if I can recreate your problem. Once I know the problem I might be able to figure out a solution.

It's a model car decal sheet that I am cropping out the logos. Once I crop then out and clear the crop, I follow your instructions. At that point, I hit the delete button and it leaves me with just the background with no decal.  My notebook I use to paint cars does not have a screenshot button that I can find.  I have a pic of the decal sheet.  I really hate to keep bothering people to do this stuff for me and would really love to learn to do these operations on my own, so, you understand my want to learn how to do this. The only pieces I need from this sheet are the numbers, the white Busch logos, Drivers name decals, and maybe some of the smaller decals if they are not available somewhere else. I'm sorry that I'm not as talented as most and I really hate to bother you with this, but I enjoy doing this and only want to get better.  Thanks, Sage!

I made an error in step 3 above. Once you've used the Magic Wand to select the parts you want to keep you need to hit Ctrl+I (Invert) and then Delete. My mistake. Conversely you can use the Magic Wand to select the bits you want to delete and then hit Delete. No inverting necessary. Sorry for that error (I said I was doing it from memory).

OK...let's start anew.

There will be times when you shouldn't expect to find what you are looking for all in one place (like your decal sheet above). However, you can use that sheet as a beginning/reference point. I snagged that one and tossed it into a 300dpi 2048x2048 blank and, quite frankly, it looks like crap and is almost at the point of being completely unusable. But it is a starting point.

For example...
The Busch logos are pretty easy to find ( https://www.google.com/search?q=busch&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAmoVChMI_LjRltLWxwIVwpqICh03kw32&biw=1876&bih=985&dpr=0.9#q=busch+logo&tbm=isch&tbs=isz:l ). These are just some of the things available when doing a Google Image Search > Large. There is also this one: http://www.millersvinylgraphics.com/images/Busch-beer-pole.gif that would be a good starting point.

Even better are the Busch logos at Brands of the World ( http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/logo/busch-beer-0 , http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/logo/busch-beer ). Why better? Because these are vector files. So, why are vector files better? Because they can be opened at any resolution & size that you like. I can take either of those logos and have them be 10' (yes...feet) tall with no loss of quality. And PSP, as far as I know, opens vector files with ease. And I checked.

Attached is what one of those Busch logs at BotW looks like when opened in PSP8 @ 300dpi. I then was able to grab the Selection Toll (possibly open it by hitting the 'S' key?), select around the Busch part, hit Ctrl+I and then 'Delete'. All I was left with was the Busch logo at essentially 17" wide on a transparent background. After that it would just be a matter of duplicating the layer, dropping it below the 1st layer (or just select the lowest layer), change the color to gold, eliminate the bar and jog the gold layer to the right. The last step would be to color the bar red. I was going to show an example of this but for the life of me I can't find the Color Palette in PSP8.

As for the other logos...Crane Cams & DieHard should be easy to find (both are at BotW).

The driver's name is nothing more than the font 'Brush Script' which should already be on your computer.

As for the number...I was going to show how to trace around the one from the decal sheet but dragging my way through PSP is so frustrating it's giving me a headache. Maybe later.

This, hopefully, should be enough to get you going.

You can also use the move tool, move the part you want to use, copy and paste it to a new sheet, then remove the background, I find it easier to remove the background with as few things in the background as possible.
