Winmip Help
« on: 01/02/16, 02:05 PM »
Hey y'all - I'm looking for some help in unpacking and packing my sound.dat file. I think I figured out how to unpack it, modify the .pck file with the files I want removed but when I repack it Winmip gives me no indication that it did anything so I figure I must be doing something wrong.  :) I searched Google and the forums here and did not find anything so I was hoping someone could give me instructions on how to modify a sound.dat file or at least how to remove some gsye's files from sound.dat.

Thanks
DDaniels

If all you are looking to do is replace some of the GSYE files (gsye01.ogg - gsye12.ogg) and as it seems you've already unpacked the sound.dat file, all you really need to do is determine which gsye**.ogg file(s) you want to replace.

You can usually listen to .ogg files using Windows Media Player ~ you may need to right-click the .ogg file, select Open with> Choose default program...> Browse... and navigate to the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe and after double-clicking the .exe be sure to tick the 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' and press OK ~ You may/may not get an error from Media Player along the lines of 'The selected file has an extension (.ogg) that isn't recognized...' Just tick 'Don't ask me again..' and 'Yes'.

Once you've determined which GSYE file(s) you want to replace you need to have files to replace them. As long as you do, you can simply rename your replacement files with the same number designation of the ones you want to replace and put it/them in the 'sound' folder. These will then overwrite the gsye**.ogg files in the .dat file. You can also, if you are so inclined, delete the 'unpack' folder as you no longer need it.

I hope I explained the process simply enough?
I went outside once. The graphics weren't all that great.
I suffer from CDO. It's like OCD, but in alphabetical order, LIKE IT SHOULD BE!
If you can't spill it, it ain't 'paint'!

Thanks, Sage for the quick response. Yes, you explained the process quite well. What I was doing is deleting a few of the .ogg files in the .pck file which I did and then according to the help file you then change the second line in the pck-file to correspond to the number of files you have left. And then pack (repack) the .pck file but Winmip didn't indicate it did anything, so I didn't know if I was doing it correctly.

I will try the method you suggest though as I think it will get the same results as what I am looking for. Thank you so much.
