Yep, that's what we call a "pigtail" bridge out here in South Dakota. Here's one of my photos of the real thing.

Back in the days before everything was paved, the bridge surface was indeed wood, so that's what you get on the Rushmore Scenic Byway.

5.5 miles of winding through the Black Hills scenery with a 1950s feel to the roadside attractions.
